Democrats scored sweeping victories in the U.S. midterm elections on Wednesday, flipping key Republican-held seats in Congress and securing historic wins in traditionally conservative states, as voters delivered a setback to President Donald Trump.
The party was projected to gain control of both chambers of Congress, with victories across several battleground states threatening to constrain Trump's legislative agenda for the remaining two years of his presidency.
Here are some of the scenes from polling stations, campaign headquarters and election-night celebrations across the United States.
Among the biggest surprises was Texas, where Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton to become the state's first Democratic U.S. senator since 1988.
Fellow Democrat Gina Hinojosa also unseated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, becoming the state's first Latina governor and ending more than three decades of Republican control of the office.
