Diwali Muhurat Trading 2026: Indian benchmark indices ended the special Diwali trading session on Sunday, November 8, marginally lower, surrendering their early gains following a sharp rally in the preceding week.
The Sensex declined 28.62 points, or 0.04 percent, to close at 80,999.40, while the Nifty fell 43.95 points, or 0.18 percent, to 24,986.40, slipping below the 25,000 mark. Market breadth remained positive despite the decline in benchmark indices, with 3,127 stocks advancing against 917 declining and 193 remaining unchanged.
Despite the subdued finish, market veterans see potential for further gains in Samvat 2083, although some of them caution that Indian equities need stronger catalysts to sustain a bull run. The special Muhurat Trading session marked the beginning of Samvat 2083, with investors entering the new Hindu calendar year after one of the strongest weekly rallies in recent years.
The Sensex had climbed nearly 400 points in early Muhurat Trading, while the Nifty crossed 25,100. However, the rally lost momentum as the session progressed, with both benchmarks eventually closing in negative territory.
The reversal followed Friday's sharp gains, when the Sensex surged 2.17 percent to 81,028.02 and the Nifty jumped 2.01 percent to 25,030.35. Both indices had closed at eight-month highs, with the Nifty reclaiming 25,000 for the first time since February 27.
