Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed in red on October 14 after falling from day's high due to various reasons, including profit booking and FII selling.
On October 14, the Sensex ended 251.89 points or 0.34% lower at 72,781.89, and the Nifty closed 99.25 points or 0.44% lower at 22,622.70. About 2,439 shares advanced, 1,757 shares declined, and 154 shares were unchanged.
In the broader market, while indices had mirrored the benchmarks initially, they fared a tad better than headline gauges and closed marginally down.
In the Nifty 50, Nestle India was the top gainer and it ended the day almost 4% higher. The company will announce its September quarter earnings Thursday. On the other hand, Shriram Finance fell by the same quantum to be the top laggard. ICICI Bank and Shriram Finance were the key drags on the index, but Infosys and Reliance Industries helped restrict losses.
Several finance majors, especially the non-banking financial companies, were under pressure throughout the trading session. Piramal Finance, L&T Finance, Cholamandalam Investment And Finance Co., and LIC Housing Finance fell 3-5%. Barring the Nifty PSU Bank, all sectoral indices tracking finance players, declined. The Nifty Financial Services index was the worst-hit among all sectoral indices. Losses in Shriram Finance and Bajaj Finance weighed on this index.
