Anthropic generated $16.96 billion in revenue in the third quarter ended September 30, compared with $1.4 billion in the corresponding period last year. Revenue also increased from $11.56 billion in the second quarter, highlighting the rapid expansion of demand for its AI products and services.
Despite the impressive numbers, Anthropic's growth momentum showed signs of cooling. Revenue increased approximately 47% quarter-on-quarter in the September quarter, compared with 144% growth in the preceding three months. The slowdown highlights the challenges of sustaining extraordinary expansion as competition intensifies in the AI industry.
Anthropic reported a net loss of approximately $23.29 billion for the third quarter, narrowing from $66.3 billion in the previous quarter. However, the company swung back to an operating loss of $567 million after recording operating income of $974 million in the second quarter. Much of the reported net loss was linked to non-cash accounting adjustments involving convertible notes and derivative liabilities.
Rising computing costs have emerged as a major challenge for Anthropic. Operating expenses increased to $17.5 billion in the third quarter from $10.6 billion in the previous quarter. The company attributed much of the pressure to expensive short-term computing capacity, which it had to secure to meet rising demand. Its adjusted operating margin also declined to 15% from 19% in the second quarter.
