President Donald Trump claimed Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an "energy ceasefire" as the countries trade blows on energy infrastructure, but it's unclear whether either side has agreed to a truce.
"Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!" Trump said in a social media statement, without providing details about the alleged pact.
The White House referred CNBC to the social media post when asked for more information on the ceasefire.
Trump's statement on Truth Social comes as energy costs soar globally during the U.S. war with Iran. An energy truce between Ukraine and Russia could help to alleviate the oil and gas crunch ahead of winter.
In a social media post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: "Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well."
