Indian equity markets are entering Samvat 2083 on a strong footing after an extraordinary week on Dalal Street, with the Nifty 50 reclaiming the psychologically important 25,000 mark and the Sensex crossing 81,000.
Both benchmark indices recorded their biggest weekly gains since February 2021, rising 8.6% and 8.8%, respectively, as a sharp correction in crude oil prices, aggressive foreign fund buying and better-than-expected corporate earnings triggered a broad-based improvement in investor sentiment.
The rally was particularly significant as Indian equities managed to outperform global markets despite a sharp selloff in technology stocks and AI-linked shares. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs), who had remained net sellers for much of 2026, returned aggressively to domestic equities. They purchased shares worth ₹13,749.82 crore on Friday, according to exchange data, taking their purchases over the last five trading sessions to ₹35,781 crore, according to market estimates.
On Friday, 6 November, the Nifty 50 advanced 493.75 points, or 2.01%, to close at 25,030.35, while the BSE Sensex surged 1,718.01 points, or 2.17%, to settle at 81,028.02. Both indices ended at their highest levels in more than eight months. The Nifty and Sensex also extended their winning streaks to seven consecutive sessions, their longest such runs in 14 months and 26 months, respectively.
Despite the sharp recovery, both benchmarks remain in negative territory for 2026, with the Nifty down 4.2% and the Sensex lower by 4.9%, compared with a 7% gain in the MSCI Emerging Markets index.
